Beth Finke Captures the Spirit

Last Friday 12 State, Inc. had a Vision Midwest Conference fundraiser in Oak Park, IL.  The speakers included Bonnie Hibel, one of the hosts who spoke about becoming visually impaired later in life and her ultimately successful struggle to find work again, and Beth Finke, NPR commentator, author and journalist who lost her sight in her mid-20s.

Beth has just written a wonderful post in her blog that capture the spirit of the Vision Midwest Conference.  It really is more about what people who are blind or visually impaired are doing – and they’re doing a lot! – than what they “can” do.

You can catch Beth at the Vision Midwest Conference in October where she will be on two different panels (one on blogging and one on writing).  Beyond blogging and writing there is another reason to see Beth at the conference – she’s really a great speaker too!

I too have vision loss – progressive. At my age, 57, the past 10 years have been a journey of wills. The will for people to think I’m brain dead and ultimately can’t do the same “stuff” everyone else does who has a brain. The WILL I have found inside and pulled out to accept the use of the white cane, the step forward to accept what is happening and keeping that glass half full, starting a business to help others with life challenges and applying for employment knowing my brain function is amazing despite my vision function. People are correct; sometimes I see more than they do. In more ways than one. I appreciate your fortitude. People like you keep me believing and passing that encouragement on to others who need the arm around the shoulder. Thank you….

This is a very unique conference in that a bowling tournament is involved. I am an avid totally blind bowler who is delighted to attend this conference. I’m glad the weather will probably be mild at that part of the year.

Thank you for your comments Charmaine and Willie – we’re really excited to have Beth come and to have a bowling tournament among the many other presenters, sports and events! The Vision Midwest Conference covers quite a bit – from accessible technology to yoga – but the common thread that runs throughout is that it’s about what people are doing. We want this conference to be your conference – we want it to be about you.
